Despite the global recession, the number of participants was higher than ever before: 436 participants from 36 countries (up from 30 in 2010). Non-OECD countries represented 28% of countries but only 5% of participants. Eighty-six per cent of the participants came from Europe, 6% from North America, and 2% each from Asia, Oceania, Africa and South America. It should be noted however, that a significant proportion of those ‘coming from’ OECD countries and Europe are in fact nationals of non-OECD countries outside Europe. Participants represented research institutes (33 %), academia (32 %), private companies (30 %), government (3 %), NGOs (1 %) and international organisations (1 %). Forty-seven per cent of participants were female, and 17% of participants were students.
